Rhodia Silcea, is at the core of Rhodia’s Applications Chemistry business. It comprises two high added-value activities of which Rhodia is the global leader: Rare Earth-based high-technology materials (Electronics & Catalysis) and High-Performance Silicas (Silica Systems).

The Rare-Earth global expert
Rare earths are natural elements present in abundance in the earth’s crust.  After separation to very high purity levels, Rhodia Silcea formulates the resulting rare earths into high-technology materials for use in automotive catalysis (emissions control for gasoline and diesel vehicles) or electronic applications (phosphors for low-energy lamps, LCD and plasma flat screens, precision optics, etc.).

The Silica worldwide leader
Rhodia’s silicas are amorphous precipitated silicas, obtained from a process using sand (the most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust) as its primary raw material.  These silicas are used in polymer reinforcement (in particular rubber and elastomers) or as "carriers" for powdered foodstuffs (human and animal).
Having invented high-performance silicas in the 1990s, Rhodia has developed products that are key to a number of innovations, such as "green" (low-energy consumption) tires.
