Rhodia Silica Systems : use of
silica, HDS silica, precipitated silica, ...
Silica, or silicon dioxide, SiO2, in its pure form is
colorless to white. Silica is widely and abundantly distributed throughout
the earth, both in the pure state and in silicates, (e.g., in quartz,
agate, amethyst, chalcedony, flint, jasper, onyx and rock crystal), opal,
sand, sandstone, clay, granite and many other rocks. Silica occurs in
several forms and is involuable in water, slightly soluble in alkalies
and soluble in dilute hydrofluoric acid.

The manufacturing process :
Precipitated silicas are produced by chemical reactions and precipitation,
which is achieved by neutralizing a solution of sodium silicate with an
acid, often sulfuric acid. The by-product, sodium sulfate, is eliminated
via filtration. The remaining silica is then dried and formed based on
its final application. The precipitation stage determined the microscopic
particle morphology for most of the silica's application properties.
